I own a lot of cookbooks but this was my first food deck so I was not sure whether I would like it or if I would even use the recipe. My fear was that it might be gimmicky and produce food that was subpar or not entirely different from the recipes in the appetizer magazines and cookbooks I currently have. Lucky for me and my stomach I was wrong.
The first thing I noticed was how much I enjoyed the food deck concept over a cookbook. It made it enjoyable to browse recipes with friends, especially with the big color photos on one side of each card. The cards were also very user friendly to cook from. I find that cooking multiple recipes from one cookbook can be challenging because you constantly have to keep your places and if you are making more than one recipe at once, flip back and forth. There is also a chance you'll spill on the book. With these cards I can easily lay out the instructions for the recipes I am making and carry them around with me in the kitchen. This was especially helpful when a friend and I hosted a party this weekend as we were able to divide up the recipe cards we were using which was infinitely more helpful than sharing a book.
Best of all, the recipes work and are impressive. They are the perfect balance of not requiring too many steps, and yet still providing special touches and layered flavor combinations. Many recipes are 100% from scratch but if you wanted to you could easily take shortcuts to make them easier. Most ingredients can easily be found at the average grocery store, though some may require a trip to a specialty store for ingredients that could be kind of pricy or not be used every day. However, we found we were able to easily substitute ingredients in and out while still getting great flavor. One recipe, for example, called for creme fraƮche, but because we knew we wouldn't use very much of it we instead used sour cream and still were impressed by the flavors. So far our favorites have been the Spinach and Smoked Gouda Spheres, Miniature Tartlets with Walnut, Brie and Grape Salsa, Puff Pastry with Cremini Mushroom Filling, and Cornbread with Fig Tapenade. My vegetarian friend especially appreciated that there were a large selection of creative and delicious vegetarian appetizers to choose from as well as a couple of vegan options (though not the most exciting).
In addition, there is also a fold out sheet of tips and tricks for throwing a cocktail party which can be helpful if you've never hosted on before and need to understand the basics like how much alcohol to buy, how many appetizers to serve, etc.
Overall this is a great book full of diverse and appealing recipes you will actually make and enjoy.Get more detail about
